The sun shines on our 75th Anniversary picnic
Twenty members of the club and their partners chanced the vagaries of the local weather forecasts to attend what was the Club's final act of celebration for our 75 Anniversary Year. They were rewarded by sunshine for most of the afternoon, with parasols aloft for much of the time. Yes it did spit with rain for about five minutes, but otherwise a very pleasant afternoon was spent by all.
Members gathered at Sowerby in the garden of President, Patricia Hinton and her husband Russell. They enjoyed their own food accompanied by drinks kindly supplied by our hosts for the day. At about 3.30pm one of our Honorary Vice Presidents, Irene Arnold, was invited to cut the Anniversary Cake.
Our thanks go to Patricia and Russell for going to so much trouble on our behalf; it really was worth it and a fitting end to our season.
Northern Counties Annual Competitions
The NCPF Annual Competitions were held in April this year and for the first time Electronic Images, or Projeceted Digital Images (as they are known by also) were fully intergarted into the Competitions with the former Slide Sections being run as Dual Projection Projected Image Sections. For the first time also there was a Club Competition for Electronic Images.
Northallerton submitted entries in all four Club Competitions and achieved a superb set of results.
In the Bewick Trophy for Colour Prints we came 3rd to Sunderland and Stokesley.
In the Corder Trophy for monochrome Prints we came 2nd to Sunderland.
We won the Galloway Rose Bowl for Slides for the eighth time.
And Finally in the new NCPF Trophy for Electronic Images we came Joint 1st with Penrith.
Individual members also achieved notable success with Henrietta Byrne winning the Thomas Bates Trophy for the Best Landscape in the Projected Images Section with "Dead Tree, Rannoch Moor" and Dave Coates being placed 2nd overall in the Wier Trophy for the best Colour Print in the Competitions with "Evening Light on the Salt Pans".
In addition to this 9 different members received a total of 20 Highly Commended Certicates; 6 members had a total of 12 pictures chosen to represent the Federation in the PAGB's National Inter-Federation Competitions (known as the Alliance Competitions); and 11 members had 15 pictures chosen for the Selectors Choice Portfolio.

Northallerton and Stokesley Draw in Annual Inter-Club Competition
This year's Inter-Club between Stokesley PS and Northallerton CC, held on Thursday 12th March 2009 at Stokesley, ended amazingly in a draw after the Judge, David Richardson APAGB of Ryton CC, gave his verdict on the 15 Electronic Images and 15 Prints submitted to him by each club.
We were shown the Electronic Images first and at the end of that round Northallerton were nicely in the lead with 375 points as against 364 for Stokesley. David then turned to the Prints and after one of the best evening's judging members have seen for a long time we got the results of the Prints round and learned that Stokesley had scored 383 points as against Northallerton's 372. When these scores were added to those from the Electronic Images, the result was 747 points for each club.
Dave Smith (electronic images) and Guy Davies (prints) both of Stokesley were the individual winners, with Dave Coates from Northallerton being their highest scorer in both Electronic Images, with 29 points for "Hard Times!" and in the Prints with 28 points for "Evening Light Malham".

Northallerton's Success in the NCPF Club Championship
The Club Championships were held on Sunday 8th February 2009 at Washington. This year for the first an Electronic Image Section replaced the traditional Slide Section in this competition. Our club entered this section and also the Prints Section which is held on the same day. In each section there are two rounds, a first round and a Final Round. The top six in the first round go through to the final round.
At the end of the First Round of 16 images Northallerton CC were placed fourth in the Electronic Images, 10 points behind the leaders, Stokesley PS. In the Final Round of 20 images Northallerton pulled out the stops and ended up in first place with 242 points, 3 ahead of Stokesley who were placed second.
In the Prints Section Northallerton were placed joint first with Stokesley after the First Round of 12 prints. In the Final Round of 15 Prints we managed to achieve second placed with 183 points, 3 behind Sunderland who were the winners. A bonus for the club was that one of our members, Dave Coates, won the prize for the Best Monochrome Print in the Championship with "Hard Times" pictured here.
To come First in the Electronic Images and Second in the Prints is a stunning result for the club and means that we have been invited to represent the Federation in both of the PAGB National Club Championship Competitions, at Warwick on Saturday July 11th 2009 for Electronic Images and at Connah's Quay on Saturday 24th October 2009 for Prints. Well done to all who took part by submitting images for selection.

Results of the 2009 PAGB Great British Cup
The Great British Cup is run by the PAGB and is a national inter-club competition for Electronic Images. It is divided into two Sections, the "Open" Section, which we entered and a "Small Clubs" Section for clubs who feel they cannot raise enough club members to meet the criteria for the "Open" Section. Northallerton were one of only two NCPF clubs to enter the Open Section, whilst a another six entered the Small Clubs Section.
Out of 86 clubs nationwide who entered the Open Section , Northallerton were placed a very creditable 22nd, not bad for a small local club like ours. Congratulations go to Sheila Coates for her "Limestone Erratic" and to John Webster for his "Oryx in the Namib", both of which scored 14 points out of a maximum 15.

75th Anniversary Lecture an Outstanding Success
Northallerton Camera Club was formed in the autumn of 1933 and on Monday 10th November 2008 we celebrated our 75th Anniversary with a
Birthday Lecture given by the world famous landscape photographer
Charlie Waite, called
Making Landscape Photographs. The event was held at The Forum in Northallerton and was supported by an audience of well over 250, attracted from all over the North of England.

Charlie Waite with our President, Patricia Hinton, our Chairman, Val Burdis, and the Mayor of Northallerton, Tony Hall.
Charlie was his usual self giving a well thought out and at times humorous dissertation on landscape photography followed by a presentation in the second half of some of his superb landscapes. Light refreshments at half time were followed by a raffle generously supported by the donation of prizes by Charlie himself, Barkers, Grovers, Lewis & Coopers, and Maxwells of Northallerton, Fotospeed and Joe Cornish. Our Honorary Life Vice-President, Jack Pygott, gave a vote of thanks to Charlie.

Northern Counties International Salon of Photography
A total of ten club members submitted entries to the above event, which was selected over the second and third weekends in October. The entries were included Prints, Slides and Electronic Images. The Exhibition attracted over 5,000 entries from over 50 different countries, world wide. A superb total of some 37 Acceptances were received by our members, and special mention should be made of
Steve Byard, who gained two Acceptances in the Colour Print Section, the first time he has entered an International Exhibition.
In addition to this, three members of the club won awards for some of their entries.
Chris Morton won an
"Certificate of Merit" in the General Section, and
John Webster won the
"Northumbria Trophy" for the best entry by and NCPF worker in the Nature Section and also a
"Certificate of Merit" in the Photo-Travel Section. A
"Certificate of Merit" was also awarded to
Sandy Furniss in the General Section, but that pales into insignificance when you learn he also won one of the premier awards, the
"FIAP Gold Medal" for the best entry of four Accepted Slides in the Photo-Travel Section.
Well done to all who took part; now we can look forward to next year's event.

75th Anniversary Exhibition a Huge Success
Our 75th Anniversary Exhibition held in Northallerton Town Hall, last Saturday (6th September) was a resounding success despite the efforts of the weather to spoil things. A continual stream of visitors and the time many of them stayed testified to the quality and success of the event. The comment overheard early in the day from one visitor "They have a lot of very talented members." was very welcome but perhaps accurately reflected the reaction of most who viewed the exhibition.
A display of prints from many members of the club was supplemented by a slide show running continuously throughout the day and by two digital image presentations on lap tops. To cater for the comfort of visitors and to raise necessry funds for the club, light refreshments were available throughout the day. A tombola attracted many of our visitors and members are to be congratulated on their generosity with prizes. In line with our aim to support the Disabled Photographers Society the Exhibition also included a small display by one of their members.
Members made themselves available throughout the day to help visitors and to answer any qestions they might have. Visitors included not only local residents and shoppers but also members of clubs from as far away as Tyneside and Teesside. The club owes a debt of thanks to all those members (perhaps the majority of the club) who contributed towards the success of the day.
